Air dry clay is amazing New pics 06/02

Postby Maggie on Fri Dec 18, 2009 1:25 am

Hi everyone, I thought I would give Air dry clay a go and it is amazing. This is not a tutorial but I thought I would share some information on how I found it. It is so pliable and even if it dries a bit you can wet and start again. It sands perfectly and leaves no scrap marks. I have Hannie Sarris's paints so I will paint her as well. There are a few things to iron out on her still but I'm so pleased with her. Will post more pics as I managed to get them, I messed up a bit on the full face as my hand shook.

How did you keep it from cracking? Whenever I've used air dry clay, it's cracked when it dried. Which was fine for what I was working on, but I don't necessarily want that every time.

It is so funny, I am making a life size face in air dry clay to go on a huge angel I am making. It is going to be mostly paper mache so it is light enough to hang way up above my stand at the flea, I know what you mean about being able to rewet it. I haven't sanded it yet though, I was afraid to. It doesn't shred? I have it pretty smooth and didn't want to mess it up. What grit paper are you using?

Heather, I followed hannie Sarris's instructions where you make sure each layer is dried and then you wet that layer before applying the next layer. Hope that makes sense.
Linda I have now sanded the face and fingers and have had no problems with shredding. I used sanding sponges medium and fine. Here is the uk ebay link , but i'm pretty sure you can get it in the us. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GENUINE-3M-03808-MEDIUM-SANDING-SPONGE-x-20_W0QQitemZ230404020543QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint?hash=item35a526593f

Ok I am still loving the air dry clay. I only have to do a bit of sanding and then conquer the painting, (not one of my skill areas). I hope to take a few photos today.

Here is where I'm up to in my sculpt. I am delighted with her and have purposely made her with a longer boy and legs. She is about 14 inches tall, my tallest so far. I still have a bit of sanding to do and then I will paint hr. Will post pics as soon as I've done that bit.

Oh you lot are so lovely thank you all. I have been diagnosed with rhuematoid arthritis and this clay is so soft on my hands. I nearly had to give up sculpting and then thought I would give the air dry a go.

Maggie! She looks wonderful! You have really done a fantastic job on her. How did you like working in the paper clay vs. the polymer clay? I would think you have a preference now after completing this project. hehe You really did a great job and she is really smooth too. Very nice.

Hugs,
Lori

Thank you Heather. Lori I really love working with the paper clay and although I love polymer, my hands are too sore to knead it properly and I've tried using the old pasta machine and it too hurts to use. I am going to keep trying to use polymer as I will do smaller projects with it.
