with Jadine of Dew Fairies by Maggie

DECEMBER 2008
Jadine C. OOAKDollart.com October Artist of the Month

By Tenderspirit the Fairy Reporter

I was so excited to dust off my little fairy wings to get ready for the long flight to go visit Jadine C. to interview her so I could bring you her story. Boy what a journey that was by the time I reached her home in Italy my little wings were just about wore out. She gave me a tour of her lovely home, it was just beautiful and decorated with such an artist’s twist. She gave me a warm cup of tea and we began to chat I asked her about her personal history and if her family was artistic. She was tempted not to reply to this question, but said that her personal history has a lot to do with her style in sculpting… She answered, “Let’s say I come from a seriously troubled family. It took me ages and a lot of efforts to be if not happy, well, quiet and content within. I was lucky though I was born in Firenze (Florence), maybe the most beautiful town in the world. I grew up surrounded by art and in my darkest moments there have always been something beautiful to look at for me to find relief. Art has always been my hideaway and my safe house. In museums and libraries I feel at home. In Florence, you can see the art of…Michelangelo, Donatello, Benevento Cellini, Brunelleschi, Leonardo, Botticelli, Lippi, Beato Angelico…just to mention a few… My family are “artistic” and very creative. My mother loves to sew and she taught me to sew when I was a young child. My father is a blacksmith and works with wrought iron. I’m trying to involve him in a sculpting project right now.”

Jadine graduated from University of Bologna, summa cum laude, she majored in Performing Arts Management. The theatre was one of her first loves since youth. She has always been crafty, and can remember learning as a child in school how to create a papier mâché puppet. She believes she was eight and that must have been the first time she “sculpted”. She has always been involved in some creative projects and as a teenager she used to sculpt salt dough dolls. She found out she had a celiac disease and the flour in the salt dough made her very sick…Later on she started creating rag dolls and still does them sometimes just for the fun of it.

She told me that she finds sculpting to be her form of relaxation. When asked what she enjoys making she responded, “I do have a real obsession for vampires. I’ve had this obsession forever. I’m very interested in the relationship slave driver/victim involved in the concept of vampires. I mean each vampire was formerly a victim, wasn’t it? One of my first sculptures was called “Innocence violated” and represented a young woman bit by a vampire laying in her coffin. That sculpt was the beginning of a series I called “A Vampire or a Victim?” quoting a beautiful verse of a U2 song (“Stay”, complete verse was A vampire or a victim, it depends on who is around). I asked her how her interest in sculpting in polymer clay began? She replied, “By chance? Or you can say it was destiny, perhaps…just surfing the Internet. I saw some OOAK dolls on eBay and immediately told to myself, I want to do this!.”When I asked her if she had ever made a sculpt that she couldn’t part with she giggled and said, “When I complete a sculpt I go through a strange process. At first I love it, and can’t take my eyes off of it. This usually lasts about one or two days, no more. Then I start seeing flaws, and can’t look at it anymore: it’s time to part…and I start a new one. There’s just one I really miss, and it’s one of my latest, I called her “The Dream Of A Pre Raphaelite Fairy”, she has become my avatar, now.” She told me she hates sanding it is her least favorite part of sculpting and she spends a lot of time on sculpting hands and find that to be the most challenging. Her favorite part of sculpting is creating faces and hairdressings. She went on to say, “This year 2008 has been both my most memorable moment in sculpting and also my lowest moment. I had very little time for sculpting and created very few dolls, and my skill suffered a lot being away from clay. But it has been a memorable year too, with beautiful things which happened to me: I’ve been elected Oda artist of the month, I’ve made a couple of dolls I really liked, and I’ve also started to do collaboration dolls which is really fun and also a challenge. So far I’ve made a couple sculpts with Patrizia Cozzo (Carota) and I really enjoyed it (and hope more will come). I will do soon a collaboration I’m looking forward to with the great artist Eneida Rosa.”

I told her that I knew she intended to continue to improve her beautiful style, but asked her what are her sculpting goals for the future? She looked at me with her big eyes and kind of scrunched up her nose and said, “I want to improve my skills and I’m trying to get my sculpts to be more anatomically correct. As my skill improves in this area I believe I will feel more confident and be able to better express myself and feel like creating a lot more often. I have many ideas in mind but lack the confidence to attempt them at the moment. I would also like to create a Ball Jointed Doll.”Her advice to all new sculptors is: “Don’t give up, remember to have fun and sculpt, sculpt, sculpt! I believe using a visual reference while sculpting is the best way to learn.”

I asked what Influences, either artists or others that have made a difference to your work: she said, “I’m particularly devoted to Pre Raphaelites painters and to Italian Renaissance painters and sculptors, but I also get inspiration from fairy artists such as Rackham, C. M. Barker, B. Froud and many others. I have also been influenced and inspired by Shakespeare and Elizabethan theatre and by XIX Century poets (such as Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, E. A. Poe, C. Baudelaire, A. Rimbaud, C. A. Swinburne and many others), play-writers, and in fantasy movies (Legend, Labyrinth, Star Wars…)”!

I asked how being a member of OOAKDollart has advanced her art: she said, “Oda is a caring family, members here never let you down. They are a tower of strength and always give you courage to go on! This is really a beautiful place; everyone is so sharing and helpful. There are a lot of things to learn from othersJadine’s biggest wish is to be able to support herself totally with her art.. I enjoyed her warm and friendly demeanor and hated to have to leave for my homeward journey. But as I hugged her good-bye I promised I would visit again.

I have been through lots of tips in ODA in the current and archived posts and holy mackerel there are so many unbelievably helpful tips, I had a really hard time picking just one. The good thing is I won't be running out of Tips any time soon! I thought this tip was good for this time of year with all the gifts and shipping of items we all do. I know I was nervous about shipping my first faerie and didn't want her to break, so here is the first tip-of-themonth....

Shipping those Fragile Scultpings:

If you are packing delicate or fragile pieces for shipment, remember the post office rule: "If you can shake it, we can break it." The following process takes time but creates an almost foolproof layer of protection around your valuable items: -- Wrap the shipment You can combine similar items, such as bowls, at this stage. -- Wrap the resulting parcel a few times in stretch film, going in atleast two different directions. -- Choose a strong box with at least two inches of room on each side of your wrapped parcel. Tape the box bottom with at least two layers of tape. -- Fill the bottom first with a layer of packing peanuts. Put your wrapped parcel on top, then fill the box with peanuts from the top. Use only enough foam peanuts to fill the space -- if you have to push down to get the box shut, remove some peanuts instead of adding internal pressure on the box. -- Seal it with two layers of tape. Label it "Fragile" on more than one side.

"New"....this item isn't really new. It was around in the 1970's when I was a kid, but it disappeared off the market. It's back now and I'm so excited that it is available. What is this product? It's called Dip It Fantasy Film Resin. Create beautiful flowers, stained glass ornaments, jewelry and Fantasy wings! The product is Dip It Fantasy Film and is described as a colored liquid acrylic resin. To dry quickly in the wire loop, it must contain a large proportion of fast drying solvent, such as toluene, which brings me to the warning label of this product: Toluene is highly flammable. Do not store close to a heat source. Always use in a well ventilated area. Avoid splatters in eyes and mouth.
Keep out of reach of small children!

Fantasy Film Coloured Resin

  • Create your own exciting shapes.
  • Simply create a form using craft wire.
  • Bend it into your required shape.
  • Dip your form into the ready to-use coloured resin.
  • remove the form from the resin and allow to air dry.
  • twist together several shapes to build your creation.
  • Add other craft accessories for detail.
  • Craft Projects.

DIP IT FANTASY FILM

Fantasy Film Crafting is entertaining, educational and highly original. Combining many basic crafting skills and developing artistic originality. The process is easily mastered, and can be used for both enjoyment and profit.

Fantasy Film Do's and Don'ts

Do's

  • Always supervise Children
  • Always work in an adequately ventilated area.
  • Ensure container lids are replaced firmly when not in use.
  • Store in a cool dry environment.

Don'ts

  • Do not use near a naked flame.
  • Do not inhale fumes.
  • Do not take internally.
  • Do not store at high temperatures.
  • Do not allow resin to freeze

Basic material requirements:

Fantasy film Liquid Resin Strengthener is optional, and recommended for larger surface areas of film or where added strength may be required. Thinner is optional, and recommended for thinning resin that shows signs of thickening after being exposed to the environment for long periods. Crafting wire, of various gauges for forming and tying. Floral Tape for covering and combining stems. Scissors or wire cutters.

HOW TO Step by Step Instructions:

Firstly decide on the shape you wish to make. For simplicity we will assume a simple petal design.
Take a length of Crafting wire about 6-10 inches in length. For a leaf design a Green Florist Wire idea, this will give your leaf edges a natural green colouring, for other items such as coloured petals, a plain florist wire or Craft wire is ideal.

Loop the wire to form a petal shape. It is important to twist the base of the loop, and ensure a tail of wire about 3" long, which will be held when dipping and used to support the form during drying.

Dip the loop by holding the stem and submerging the loop into the liquid, ensuring the liquid reaches just past the loop twist. Carefully remove the loop from the liquid, ensuring you do not make contact with the container, as this may burst the film.

Quickly turn the form upright, allowing any excess liquid to flow back towards the stem. Remove any excess liquid from the stem on the edge of the can. To dry the petal stick the wire tail into a piece of polystyrene or a potatoe. Allow the resin to dry for between 5-10 minutes.

To produce a stronger film, you can then dip the petal in strengthener, and again allow to dry.
Repeat the process to make several petals. Combine your petals using a fine craft wire, or rose wire, and cover with Floral Tape. Stamens can be added. these can be either made by making a small hook at the end of a small piece of Rose Wire or Beading Wire and dipping it into the resin, or use craft Stamens.

Hints and Tips:

While most shapes are easily made by hand, greater uniformity can be achieved by using a bottle or cardboard tube to form the shape around. For repeated shapes use pins and polystyrene foam to create a small jig. Only remove the lid from the can when dipping. Prolonged exposure to the air will result in hardening of the resin.

Fantasy Film is available in:

Hi Everyone. I know that everyone is busy getting ready for the holidays and of course we are all busy shopping and baking and creating for all the people we love. Well, our Fearies need some fun gifts, too, but seeing as they are so small, perhaps it may be better to give them something that doesn't cost quite so much. I have found some websites that are offering our dolls just that, beautiful things at a discount...

Check these places out to find some of your supplies!

We know there are always great deals to be found there. I do searches there all the time,
it just depends on what you are looking for... I hope you find something you may be able to use. If you know of any other bargains, please don't hesitate to share your information.

Thanks and happy shopping!

The site is still under construction with more changes still coming. It has been a long time in the making but finally I am starting to be able to put into the site the changes that I originally had planned. I
am so grateful for all of the members who have chosen to make ODA their home away from home, and for all them that have jumped in to help improve the experience of those of you who come to visit. I hope to have some more articles soon and things that you will find
